He was a 1936 graduate of the University of Minnesota and received the outstanding achievement award from the Univ. of Minnesota School of Mineral and Metallurgical Engineering in 1966. He was an engineer with the Minnesota State Highway Department in 1936, a junior engineer at Pickands Mather & Company in Minnesota, 1937-1938, and was an engineer with Phelps Dodge Corporation in Morenci, AZ from 1939 to 1941. In 1941 he joined Bethlehem Steel as a mining engineer for the Bethlehem Chile Iron Mines Company, became mine superintendant in 1944, assistant manager in 1949 and manager in 1950. He returned to the Bethlehem Steel Corporate Headquarters in 1954 as assistant to the vice president of mining and became the general manager in 1957. In 1963 he became the assistant vice president of mining and became vice president in 1966. He held that title until retiring from Bethlehem Steel in 1976. From 1977 to 1979 he was an adviser to the President of Pennsylvania Mines, a subsidiary of PP&L, now PPL. In the 1980's he worked as a volunteer science teacher at Broughal Middle School in Bethlehem and also taught English to Spanish speaking adults at the South Side branch of the Bethlehem library. He was married to his wife Victoria "Lala" (Milward) Leach for 50 years.
