From a newspaper account, 1892:
"Sketch of Mr. Herr -- said to have been a genial and compassionate man. Will be much missed.
David S. Herr was born in 1833 in Susquehanna township and was at the time of his death in his 58th year. His education was received in the public schools. He was a man of excellent business qualifications, popular among those of his acquaintances and a genial companion who will be missed in the circle in which he moved.
In 1860 he was appointed a member of a commission to select a site for a water works main and extend city limits. In 1868 he was reappointed on this commission. He has been a member of councils and in 1874, he was elected city treasurer. Mr. Herr was the Republican candidate for assembly from the city. He had served a term in the legislature and was up for re-election. His death creates a vacancy on the Republican ticket. The family of Mr. Herr is grief-stricken at the terrible fate of its head and it is heard that Mr. Herr's wife, who is subject to heart trouble, will not survive the strain. [Note: She lived to be 98.] The children are doing all in their power to help the bereaved mother bear up under her great affliction. A son of Mr. Herr was drowned in the river some time ago, and the family had hardly recovered from the effect of the shock when the news of Mr. Herr's untimely taking off was brought upon them."
