James Hence Garner, 85, of Route 3, Rutledge, formerly of the Marlow Community, Clinton, died Wednesday, March 5, (1986) at St. Mary's Medical Center in Knoxville.
He was the husband of the late Nanny Mae Garner who died in 1970.
Born and raised in Anderson County, Mr. Garner lived in Rutledge for approximately 15 years. He was a retired section hand worker for the railroad. He enjoyed gardening and fishing and was a member of Central Point Baptist Church, Rutledge.
He is survived by five daughters, Naomi Rainey of Oliver Springs, Martha Gothard of Dayton, Virginia Qualls of Harriman, Katherine Carroll of Rutledge with whom he lived, and Ruby DeVries of Chattanooga; four sons, James Leroy Garner of Clinton, Herbert Garner, Earl Garner and William Garner, all of Chattanooga; 40 grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren, step-great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
The funeral was Saturday (March 8, 1986) afternoon at 2 p.m. at Popular Creek Baptist Church, Marlow Community, with the Rev. Mack Smith officiating. Burial was at the Church Cemetery.
