Josephine E. Arritola, 89, died Monday, March 31 at an Oregon Hospital.

Josephine (Jo) E. Arritola passed away on Monday, March 31, 2014.

Josephine was born in Caldwell, Idaho, on May 21, 1924, to Claudio and Justa Lequerica Arrien. When her Mom died four months after she was born, Jo's aunt and uncle, Timoteo and Josefa Pepita Lequerica brought her to live with them and raised her, along with their five children, John, Rufus, Harry, Lib and Connie in Jordan Valley, Oregon. Jo took the bus to Caldwell to visit her father often until he died when she was 12. She started dating Joe Arritola in 1941 and they were engaged that same year. Joe served in the Air Force, serving in Africa and Italy. While he was gone, Jo lived with Lib and her husband Gene Smith and their son Gary, in Brogan, Oregon, where she attended Vale Union High School. She moved back to Jordan Valley and graduated from high school in 1942. After graduation, she moved to Seattle and when Joe returned home from World War II, they were married in Seattle on May 9, 1945 and then moved to Boise where their oldest child, James Joseph (Jim) was born in 1946 and their daughter, Joene Kay, in 1949.

Jo worked for Sears & Roebuck for many years until Joe passed away on August 2, 1962. She then worked for Monroe School in the kitchen. She married Tom Brigance on October 14, 1964. She worked for Lloyd Kalblinger at Lloyd's Country Store in Nampa and was there for many years, making so many wonderful friends.

Jo and Tom moved to Vale, Oregon in 1996. Tom died in 2007. Jo moved into Pioneer Nursing Home in 2009 and lived there until her death.

Jo's first grandchild, Amy Joene, was born in 1971 to Joene. She always called Jo "Muma" which in Basque means Grandma, as did Jim's children, Joe, Adam and Sarah and all her great-grandchildren.

Muma is survived by her daughter, Joene Arritola, granddaughter Amy Romans, and her two sons, Tanner and Trevor Romans, her daughter-in-law, Kathy Arritola and her and Jim's children, Joe and Theresa Arritola and their children, Kaelleb, Josh and Matty, Adam Arritola, Sarah Rodriguez and her husband TJ and their children, Thomas, Zettie and Tristan. She is also survived by numerous and much loved nieces and nephews and their families and her brother-in-law John Arritola.

Muma was preceeded in death by her first husband, Joe, her 2nd husband Tom and her son Jim, her natural parents, her Aunt and Uncle who raised her, her sister Lib and her husband Gene Smith, her sister Connie and her husband Calvin Stitzel, her brothers John Lequerica and his wife Lillian, Rufus Lequerica and his wife Luella and Harry Lequerica and his wife Esther.

A Vigil Service will be held Tuesday, April 8, 2014, at 6:00 p.m. at Sacred Heart Church, 811 S. Latah, in Boise. Fr. Rob Cook will celebrate the Funeral Mass Wednesday, April 9, 2014, at 11:00 a.m., at Sacred Heart with a luncheon to follow. A private burial service will follow the luncheon.
