the very beginning of the Civil War.
The 49th Regiment, Illinois Infantry was organized at Camp Butler, Illinois, and mustered in December 31, 1861. It was ordered to Paducah, Kentucky December 29 and mustered out September 9, 1865
John returned home from the war. But when he returned he was almost an invalid, caused from exposure he endured during the battle at Fort Donnelson, Tennessee, and he was never well after that
