Johnson was the 11th child born to Johnson Monroe Hooper Sr and Bernice Green Chatham Hooper in Edinburg, Leake, Mississippi.

On 11 Jan 1864 he enlisted as a Private in Perrin's 11th Regiment of the Mississippi Calvary, Company A. He served for 18 months until their surrender.

After the Civil War, he attended medical school becoming a Physician Surgeon.

He first practiced in Delta County Texas. This is where he met and married his first wife Miss Elizabeth Virginia Richardson. They were married on 11 Jan 1872.

Six known children were born to them. Davis, Mary Bernice, Johnson Monroe III, Emily Annie and twins Guy and June. Sadly, both the twins died in the spring of 1881 of Pneumonia at age 1. Their mother Elizabeth died later that summer.

On 23 Nov 1882, Johnson married his second wife Miss Annie E Tomlinson in Delta County Texas. They had no children.

By the late 1890's Johnson moved his family and his medical practice to San Antonio Texas.

His second wife Annie died in 1901. At the age of 61 he married his third wife Miss Blanche Matthews in 1908.

His third wife Blanche died in 1918.

Johnson resided with his adult daughters Emily and Mary Bernice until his death in 1932.

"HOOPER-Dr. J.M. Hooper died at his lake home in Lakeview Gardens, Sunday evening, May 22, 1932, in his 85th year. He is survived by two daughters; Misses Mary Bernice and Emily A. Hooper; also two sons, B.S. and J.M. Hooper; one grandchild and one great-grandchild.

Funeral services will be held at the parlor of the Shelley Undertaking Company, on Main Avenue, at 4 p.m. Tuesday, May 24. Internment in the Confederate Cemetery."
