Soviet General. He joined the Red Army in 1918 and served in the Russian Civil War. Following the war he held a number of staff positions including Chief of Staff for the Moscow Military District. He was appointed to Chief of Staff for the Western Front following the German invasion of the Soviet Union in 1941. In 1943 he was appointed as full commander of the Western Front leading the Soviet Red Army in the battle of Kursk and being appointed chief of staff of the 1st Ukrainian Front. He was one of the chief architects and strategists in the defense of Moscow and helped in planning the Soviet counteroffensive and capture of Berlin in 1945. Following the war he was appointed commander of Soviet forces in East Germany. In July 1946 he was promoted to the rank of Marshall of the Soviet Union and three years later was promoted to the Deputy Minister of Defense. In 1952 he rose to the rank of Chief of the General Staff and in 1960 he was awarded the rank of Inspector General of the Ministry of Defense.
