Augusta McClintock was the third of four children born to Rev. John McClintock and Caroline Wakeman McClintock. She was born in Carlisle, Pennsylvania, where her father was a professor of Greek and Latin at Dickinson College. At the age of five the family moved to New Jersey, when her father became editor of the Methodist Review. Her mother died when she was seven years old, and her father was soon remarried to Catherine W. Stevenson Emory, a widow. Shortly before her twenty second birthday she married James Madison Longacre of Philadelphia, and together they raised their four children. She died at the age of eighty-four.
