Browne B. Rice Jr., former rancher, banker and descendant of the founder of Rice University.
Rice served in the 1st Marine Division in World War II and was awarded Purple Hearts for wounds suffered on the Pacific islands of Guadalcanal and Peleliu.
Although he didn't attend the University of Texas at Austin, Rice and his wife, Anne Townes Rice, established a scholarship about 20 years ago at the UT School of Law. Rice also donated funds for scholarships at two schools he attended, Woodberry Forest School in Virginia and Schreiner College at Kerrville.
A third-generation Houstonian, Rice was born Oct. 14, 1921, to Browne Botts Rice Sr. and Kathleen Blakeley Rice.
He was 10 when his father died, and his mother and grandfather, rancher Bassett Blakeley, raised him, said his daughter, Katie Rice Lyons of Houston.
Rice was a member of the family of William Marsh Rice, the financier and philanthropist who in 1891 endowed the William Marsh Rice Institute, now Rice University.
After the war, Rice followed his grandfather into the ranching business but later switched to banking. In 1945, he married Ann Townes, a descendant of John Charles Townes, first dean of the UT School of Law.
In Houston, Rice was a founder of Chimney Rock National Bank and later executive vice president of the Galleria Bank.
In addition to his wife and daughter, Rice leaves two sons, Browne Rice III of Snowmass Village, Colo., and John Rice of Eugene, Ore.; and a daughter, Ann Rice of Centerpoint.
