As the youngest of the four, living Decker children LeRoy was always called 'Dud' by his family and friends. He was named this by his 2 year old sister, Alice who couldn't pronounce his name. It wasn't until he was a man with adult children that, when seeking a passport, he discovered his name to actually be, John LeRoy Decker, Jr. He married Margaret May Beam April 23, 1938. After their marriage the couple lived in an apartment in Etna. Later, they lived with Margaret’s father, Oscar Beam, on the farm in Slaterville Springs, NY. They remained here for the rest of their lives, raising their four children on the farm. Margaret worked for Fletcher's Dry Cleaning Company, and later for the Tompkins County Department of Taxation.
