At the age of 16, he left Germany along with his mother, Elise aged 54, and sister, Christine Charlotte aged 19, after the death of his father Caspar Niemann. They sailed on the ship Rebecca which arrived in New Orleans on November 16, 1848. Christian was a poor man and worked on the Illinois and Mississippi River steamboats. His wife: Christine left Germany on the ship Aeolus on August 15, 1852, arrived in New Orleans on October 27, 1852, and finally arrived in Beardstown on November 14, 1852. Around 1878, he established a wine and liquor business at the corner of Main and Washington Streets in Beardstown known as the Arrow Café in the mid 1900's. They were among the first members of the First Evangelical Lutheran Church in Beardstown. Eleven children were born of this union. Christian is buried in the family plot in the Oetgen Cemetery, Beardstown, row 9. It is believed that his wife, mother and several children may be buried in this plot.
