The Lutheran „Brüdernkirche" (mostly called "St. Ulrici-Brüdern") in Braunschweig is a former Franciscan church originally dedicated to Saints Mary, Francis, and Bernward. It served as the center of a partially preserved monastery complex.
Before Johannes Bugenhagen (1485–1558), a close associate and confessor of Martin Luther, held his first sermon on May 21, 1528 (Ascension Day) in the Brothers' Church, years of development had preceded. After the Reformation, the Brothers' Church and the monastery initially stood empty until 1544 when the Brothers' Church became the parish church of the St. Ulrici community. The original church on Kohlmarkt had been demolished that year. To fulfill parish duties, baptism, the most important furnishing, was transferred from St. Ulrici to the Brothers' Church and placed in the western area of the nave.
After 1945, both the church and the former monastery underwent several phases of reconstruction. The High Choir was rededicated in 1957, and in 1978, the entire church was consecrated. The medieval monastery complex preserved the cloister, sacristy, and a small chapel with a polygonal apse. The church still houses the choir stalls from the 14th century, the high altar, and a relief of St. Francis. Additionally, the partially preserved rood screen from 1592/94 is now displayed in the entrance area, and the baptismal font from the Ulrici Church, demolished in 1544, is also preserved.
