Clara's Cemetery lies about half a kilometre from the main building. The cemetery was founded as a family burial site, named after Hans Carlsen's wife, Clara Carlsen, who died on December 26, 1852.
It was established as her final resting place on the occasion of her funeral, conducted by "titular bishop" N. F. S. Grundtvig, who had married Hans Carlsen's sister, Ane Marie Elise, on October 24, 1851, 14 months before Clara's death.
A crypt was constructed at the site in 1855, which became the resting place of several Carlsen family members, including Hans Carlsen's sister, and later Grundtvig himself. The last member of the Carlsen family buried at the graveyard was Emmy Carlsen, who died in 1912.
The rest of the park is open to the public every Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday from 2-6 pm (14–18).
Clara's Cemetery is open to visitors only two days each year, on May 15th (Emmy Carlsen's birthday) and September 8th (Grundtvig's birthday). Prior appointments are necessary to visit the cemetery on those two days.
